This book was created to support children navigating big feelings, new beginnings, and the journey toward feeling safe and seen. While it offers comfort and representation for children in foster care or experiencing change, its message is universal: love, trust, and belonging grow in small, quiet moments.

She Smiled, Just a Little is the first book in a planned series exploring the complexities of out-of-home care.

Meet the Author

I’m Kayleigh - a mum, foster carer and the writer behind She Smiled, Just a Little.

This book began as a story for my children, one that they could all see themselves in and that gently reflected their world… the questions, the interactions, the moments that matter most.

Since then, it has grown into something I hope will support other families too- foster, adoptive, kinship and beautifully blended.

It’s a small book about big feelings. About the ways love can grow, even when everything feels new.
